Where to start
If you are new to this or unsure where to put your focus, here are a few ideas to help you get started.
Talk it over
Many movements have started from a chat around a kitchen table, bouncing ideas over a cuppa or hosting an initial meet-up for people who share your interest in doing something.
Display posters or share infographics online to inform people about the issues
Local and national charities will have posters or downloads for you to share, or download assets from the United Nations.
Volunteer or raise funds for local or national charities and action groups
Support what’s already happening like your local Reclaim The Night march, International Women’s Day Festival and Vox Feminarum programme for 16 Days of Activism to End Gender-Based Violenc.
Join national protests
Raise funds or organise transport to help more people afford to travel and access protests and feminist conferences such as WOW (Women of The World) and Women’s Equality Party.
Plan a discussion space to mark an awareness event
Such as International Anti-Street Harassment Week (March), National Stalking Awareness Week (April) or Domestic Violence Awareness Month (October).
Urge people in elected positions to do their bit to tackle the issues and support your ideas for change
Check out the Write To Them website which makes it easy to identify and e-mail your Councillor or MP.
Sign up for free training on bystander interventions
Right To Be empowers people to document and campaign against street harassment.
Get a group of men together to take action
White Ribbon – the UK’s leading charity engaging men and boys to end violence against women and girls; you could even get your employer, Council or local business to sign up for their training and accreditation.
Ask your local school, workplace or police service to sign up for education workshops
The following workshops are available – Schools Against Sexism with UK Feminista, Rethinking Masculinities & Allyship workshops with Beyond Equality, Online Abuse with Glitch or Domestic abuse training for employers with Safe Lives.
Start an online petition on a local issue
Such as a Council or Police policy in need of change via org or 38 degrees.
Learn about community accountability and transformative justice
Community accountability and transformative justice – how ordinary people are addressing unhealthy and abusive behaviours in their communities and helping people to take accountability for and change their behaviour.
Learn from others
You don’t have to start from scratch. There are many stories and case studies from people who have already run campaigns and change-making activities.
